Stroke Q & A

What is a stroke?

When blood flow to part of your brain is disrupted, a stroke occurs. The loss in blood supply during a stroke causes the affected area of the brain to stop working because it’s deprived of oxygen.

Also called cerebrovascular incident or a brain attack, there are different types of strokes, including:

  • Ischemic: occurs when blood vessels to the brain become narrowed or blocked
  • Hemorrhagic: caused by a blood vessel in the brain that leaks or bursts
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA): a mini-stroke that indicates a future stroke is possible

If you think you’re having a stroke, it’s important to receive medical treatment as quickly as possible so the blood supply can be restored to your brain.

What causes a stroke?

Several medical and lifestyle factors can increase your risk of having a stroke. Some of these include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise
  • Illegal drug use
  • Heavy alcohol consumption

To reduce your risk of having a stroke, maintain a healthy diet with regular exercise, drink in moderation, and work with your doctor to manage medical conditions closely.

What are the symptoms of a stroke?

The symptoms of stroke include:

  • Numbness or paralysis of the leg, arm, or face
  • Difficulty seeing
  • Balance or coordination issues
  • Slurred speech
  • Inability to understand speech
  • Sudden, severe headache

Depending on the extent of damage caused by your stroke, complications can occur. A few of these can include paralysis, difficulty speaking, challenges thinking, and pain. Strokes can also affect a person’s ability to care for themselves.
